"Bulli Blaster" Taylor targets Geale showdown!

Taylor v Geale

Middleweight veteran Shannon Taylor (49-7-3, 35 KO's), from Wollongong has turned his attention to a possible showdown with former IBO champion Daniel Geale after his planned August 5th fight in Wollongong with Danny Green fell through last week.

Green's management team sought to go to the United Stated and fight for the IBO cruiserweight title rather than take on the experienced Taylor in an all Australian blockbuster with a major fight with Roy Jones pencilled for Melbourne in November.

Shannon Taylor stated yesterday, "I am disappointed that the fight with Danny was cancelled as we would have filled out the arena in Wollongong and I am sure Danny would have earned upward of $1.5m for a fight with the Bulli Blaster."

Originally Taylor was due to go to South Africa and challenge William Gare for the WBF middleweight title in early August but that possibility has been put back until October time.

Taylor added, "I personally think a fight with Daniel Geale would be the best for Australian boxing and I would sign tomorrow if that fight could be made. He fought out of his skin against Anthony Mundine and he gained my respect. Whilst his team are waiting for the outcome of the IBO appeal to their recent fight it would make sense for Gealey and me to get it on for the Australian boxing fans. It would be a great fight for two world class fighters who would put on a boxing spectacle."

Whilst Team Geale would love to force Anthony Mundine into a re-match for the IBO title, it appears unlikely that will happen. Mundine is looking for unification fights and now he has cemented his mandatory WBA#1 position for Felix Sturm's title he should be in line to take on the German by the end of 2009 and it is unlikely he will risk his ranking with another close and difficult fight with Daniel Geale, many of whom felt was unlucky not to get the decision over twelve rounds when they fought in Brisbane last month.

Overall, timing and a desire by both fighters to continue their momentum could make this a fight to savour in the second half of 2009. The 37 year old Taylor concluded, "For anyone in the link - I would love to fight Daniel Geale in 2009.

The fans would love it and give Australia another big night of boxing and we will show Mundine and the boxing public two fighters that have heart, skill and determination. I am game for the fight and would love to discuss with the people involved."
