Davidson and Talipeau star in Aussie Title showcase

Davidson and Talipeau

A near capacity crowd at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre were treated to a stellar night at the fights in which two Australian Title fights headlined the bill.

The first of the two Australian Title contests pitted the highly-touted unbeaten Nigerian import King Davidson (9-0, 5 KO's) who was up against game competitor Robert "Gummy" Toomey (7-7, 2 KO’s).

This fight had been over a year in the making for Davidson who has searched far and wide for an opponent to square off against for this title. Coming into the fight; of Davidson's eight previous opponents he had only fought two Australian's, this is a very clear representation of how hard it is to find local opponents for the newest of Johnny Lewis' stellar prospects.

Davidson's opponent, Robert Toomey who has fought pretty much the elite of the light-middleweight division was understandably a heavy underdog and it showed throughout as Davidson clearly outworked and outhussled his more experienced opponent.

Davidson went on to win a 100-90,100-93 and 99-91 unanimous points decision.

Without a doubt the fight of the night went to the main event which saw the undefeated Junior Talipeau (14-0, 5 KO's) make the sixth defence of his Australian middleweight title against the highly accredited "Bazooka" Ben Crampton (22-3-2, 10 KO's).

In his last fight Talipeau stopped Queensland prospect Jason Hartmann in a toe to toe contest in which many believed the challenger was winning. Crampton was coming off a convincing points victory over Indonesian Champion Ade Alfons but had looked less than impressive since his loss to Commonwealth Champion Darren Barker five fights ago.

To the suprise of many in attendance, Crampton brought the fight to Talipeau, using his jab and crafty footwork to get the better of Talipeau in the opening rounds of the fight. However, in true champion style Talipeau worked his way back into the fight to win a extremely close split points decision. A rematch would certainly not be out of the question at this stage,

The judges scored the fight 96-94, 97-93 in favour of Talipeau whilst the final judge had it 95-96 in favour of Crampton. After the fight Talipeau re-iterated his desire of fighting local rival "Raging" Ryan Waters in the near future.
