SHUMENOV WINS GIFT REMATCH AGAINST CAMPILLO

Beibut Shumenov set a boxing record by securing the WBA light heavyweight title in just his tenth professional fight. The Kazakhstani outpointed Gabriel Campillo of Spain in a split-decision result to smash the mark previously set by Michael Spinks, who won a championship in his 17th pro fight.

The scorecards revealed an unusual inconsistency, with Judge Levi Martinez scoring the bout strongly in favour of Campillo (117-111), while the other judges backed Shumenov 115-113 and 117-111. Shumenov dominated Campillo in the early rounds, although the Spaniard battled back towards the middle of the clash.

"I'm not surprised by the decision, I had the better trainer and he told me what to do to win. This win is for my friends and family back in Kazakhstan." said Shumenov.

The fight was a rematch of their title clash last August when Campillo edged a questionable mixed decision, but it was the Spaniard left outraged by the scoring this time around.

"I got robbed, I want an investigation of the judges" said Campillo.

Shumenov has now notched up a record of (9-1, 6 KO's), while Campillo fell to (19-3, 5 KO's).
