POONSAWAT PUNISHES DUNNE IN FIRST TITLE DEFENCE

Bernard Dunne's first defence of the WBA world super-bantamweight title ended in defeat against Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym in Dunne’s hometown of Dublin in Ireland. Dunne impressed in the opening two rounds against his Thai opponent and looked on course to retain his crown. But the 29-year-old was floored three times in the third round and the referee stepped in to stop the contest on the three knockdown rule.

An emotional Dunne apologised for his performance after the fight. Dunne was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after the fight but was released with a clean bill of health less than an hour later.

"Thankfully Bernard is fine. His pride is wounded because he was so desperate to give the country a lift, unfortunately it wasn't to be, Poonsawat was just too strong but I've no doubt that Bernard will bounce back from this. After the Kiko Martinez defeat there wasn't too many predicting that Bernard would go on to win a world title but he did just that and he can come back from this setback as well." said Dunne's promoter Brian Peters

Dunne clinched the title by beating then champion Ricardo Cordoba in an epic contest in Dublin last March. Poonsawat also has a victory over Cordoba on his record. The Thai has won all but one of his 40 professional fights with 28 of those victories coming via knockouts.
